Bilingual Education

In this companion explored diary article â€Å"A Speech Community Model of Bilingual Education: Educating Latino Newcomers in the USA† composed by Ofelia Garcia and Lesley Bartlett the writers figure out how to address the current issue of bilingual instruction in the US. They do as such by directing a subjective contextual analysis at an isolated bilingual secondary school for Latino newcomers. They base their investigation off of a network secondary school in New York by the name of Gregorio Luperon High School. This particular school has a larger part of Dominican understudies in a city with one of the most elevated medication and crime percentages, anyway they had the option to discover accomplishment with their Speech Community Model of bilingual instruction for migrant youth. The fundamental key to this achievement was to â€Å"view second language securing as a social procedure expanding on the discourse network itself, and not similarly as the essential individual procedure. † (Par. 1) Gregorio Luperon High School is a network secondary school situated in Washington Heights, New York. The school opened in 1991 when a gathering of Dominican settlers consolidated to figure out how to make obtaining English a simpler procedure for latino worker youth. They needed an answer for the incredibly high disappointment paces of latino youth in the New York City School frameworks. This school started as only two or multi month program before understudies were placed into standard schools however in the long run in 1999 transformed into an in reality secondary school. This school originates from a local that has a larger part of Dominicans, just as one of the most elevated city crime percentages, directly behind Harlem. This Schools educators are additionally all profoundly qualified outsider Dominicans who can relate and interface with their understudies on an entire distinctive level. Bilingual Education is a theme that has never completely been bolstered over the US. As indicated by the latest numbers accessible from the U. S. Branch of Education There were around 5 million understudies delegated â€Å"English language learners† in the 2009-2010 school year. These English students are at a particular disservice and are tossed into standard schools without qualified 2 instructors to educate them. There is next to no consistency in these projects used to teach these understudies just as numerous conflicts with states who favor the â€Å"English-just methodology. † Gregorio Luperon High School in Washington Heights needed better for their outsider youth and found a superior elective strategy to procure the language. This particular High School utilized a strategy which they decided to call the discourse network model of bilingual instruction. They center around macroacquisition; which is learning language for a bigger scope. The three components they decide to concentrate on that have demonstrated to be the most significant in gaining a subsequent language were; relating to character and culture, power structure impacting language and the jobs the networks play in learning a language. In this investigation they directed they concentrated on explicit examination addresses The Research led by Garcia and Bartlett was taken from a subjective contextual investigation where they acquainted an elective technique with address the issues of latino outsider youth. In this exploration these particular inquiries were tended to; â€Å"How does the model of this school contrast from and how is it like different models currently offered for latino young people in the US? †,† What are the qualities of this model help newcomer latino adolescents training just as their English learning language? † And â€Å"What are the constraints of this model This article composed by Garcia and Bartlett call attention to the significant parts of this elective model for bilingual instruction utilized and show how and why these one of a kind techniques are fruitful for these latino newcomers. In this discourse network model utilized by the school they concentrated on seven principle factors. They accepted that these components would be fruitful and would have the option to make youth progressively open to talking unreservedly, assist them with distinguishing and feel increasingly great with their way of life just as evening out the force relations among English and Spanish. They accept these seven elements are answerable for their understudies finishing the Regents Exam and graduating High School. These effective elements utilized are ; the nonattendance of understudies who are local speakers of English, nearness of local Spanish-talking 3 latino instructors as the understudies models. Likewise the high status this school gives spanish and explicit English language securing targets. They use bilingualism as their showing system and utilize Spanish to teach thoroughly and Spanish to interface profoundly to every individual understudy. They led this examination by watching and assembling information and utilized an explanatory inductive methodology. They composed fieldnotes after every perception and meeting and started to discover associations with their speculation. The creators met up at regular intervals to survey the information gathered and to talk about. From that point they had the option to shape the seven attributes referenced before that they accepted would make Luperon school effective in their crucial helping latino migrants breeze through the Regents test and graduate secondary school. Garcia and Bartlett did an exceptionally exhaustive activity in giving enough data in their article for future teachers, bilingual instructors and language specialists to appreciate. This article not just found a fruitful elective technique to obtaining english for latino newcomers yet it likewise gave a top to bottom foundation of bilingual training being an issue all in all. Bilingual Education is an intriguing issue today and numerous outsiders are being tossed into standard schools hoping to get English without the correct apparatuses and direction. Luperon anyway needed better for their understudies. Luperon dwelling in a Latino people group with numerous latino outsiders shaped a program that permitted their understudies to not just feel great with their way of life and in their school settings yet get what it takes to finish the Regents Exam and graduate secondary school. Despite the unquestionable achievement that Luperon got in this program, I do accept their were confinements to this examination directed by Garcia and Bartlett. The main impediment of this examination being the isolation of these understudies. Putting these understudies into this isolated secondary school may permit them to secure what they have to graduate secondary school however shouldn't something be said about after that? Breezing through the Regents Exam and graduating secondary school is only one little venturing stone they have reached contrasted with the 4 long excursion they have in front of them. Likewise by isolating these understudies the English they obtain is as yet restricted and from what they gain being in this program they lose by not being around english local speakers. Is this english they procured from this sufficiently model to find them a line of work? Do any of these understudies proceed with their instruction and set off for college? In the event that they do find a new line of work and proceed with their training is their English sufficient that they will succeed scholastically as well as in Society and in their Community? These are on the whole inquiries I would have gotten a kick out of the chance to see replied in this article composed by Garcia and Bartlett. A passage where they tended to the â€Å"Aftermath† of this investigation. They worked admirably concentrating on the model and why and how it was fruitful and even what the achievement rates were nevertheless I wish they could have followed up a year or so later on understudies and found where they were at throughout everyday life. Doing this I accept would have given the investigation greater validity, permitting me and different perusers to see that this program didn't simply help the understudies over this school year yet kept on continuing and assist them with succeeding scholastically and in Society also. Garcia and Bartlett give the perusers an effective and elective strategy into bilingual training. There is such little consistency in all the bilingual training programs gave everywhere throughout the US, information on an effective program like this can conceivably be a tremendous advance a positive way for this questionable point. Simply consolidating a portion of the thoughts that the writers recommended and utilized in their article can be helpful for future educators, language specialists and strategy producers. They accepted that the fundamental key to the accomplishment of this model was to see second language procurement as all the more a social procedure expanding on the discourse network itself , and not simply the essential individual procedure. They did this by deciding to concentrate on three significant components that appear to be overlooked in all other bilingual projects around the US; relating to character and culture, power structure impacting language and the jobs the networks play in learning a language. â€Å"This discourse network model of the school gives the oxygen in the sheltered island these understudies need to learn and succeed socially and 5 scholastically. † This is a program that ideally can be adjusted by schools all around the US, to allow the migrants to succeed scholastically as well as socially also.

Affectability examination is a strategy that demonstrates precisely how much a tasks productivity (NPV or IRR) will change because of a given change in a solitary information variable, different things held steady. Affectability investigation starts with a base case created utilizing anticipated qualities (in the factual sense) for every questionable variable. At that point, each questionable variable is typically changed by a fixed rate sum above and beneath its normal worth, holding every single other variable consistent at their normal qualities. In this manner, all info factors with the exception of one are held at their base case esteems. The subsequent NPVs (or IRRs) are recorded and plotted. In spite of the fact that affectability examination is generally utilized in venture chance investigation, it has extreme impediments. On the off chance that an info variable isn't relied upon to fluctuate a lot (is generally sure), a task would not be unsafe regardless of whether an affectability examination demonstrated NPV to be exceptionally touchy to changes in that factor. All in all, a ventures independent hazard, which is what is being estimated by affectability investigation, relies upon both the affectability of its benefit to changes in key info factors just as the scopes of likely estimations of these factors. Since affectability investigation considers just the principal factor, it can give deceiving results. Besides, affectability investigation doesn't think about any communications among the questionable info factors; it considers every factor freely of the others. Regardless of the inadequacies, affectability examination provides administrators with significant data. Initially, it gives gainfulness breakeven data to the project’s unsure factors. Second, affectability examination tells supervisors which input factors are generally basic to the tasks productivity, and consequently to the project’s money related achievement. With such factors distinguished, directors can invest the most energy determining the factors that â€Å"count,† so the assets consumed in the examination can be as beneficial as could reasonably be expected. Situation examination is an independent hazard investigation method that considers the affectability of NPV to changes in key factors, the feasible scope of variable qualities, and the connections among factors. To direct a situation investigation, chiefs pick an awful situation (I. e. , low volume, low rescue esteem, etc), a normal or undoubtedly set, and a good† set. The subsequent information esteems are then used to ascertain NPVs for a few â€Å"scenarios,† typically three. With NPVs for the most noticeably awful, no doubt, and best cases, chiefs can figure out the changeability of the productivity of a task that outcomes from vulnerability. In particular, if probabilities are appended to the situations, a standard deviation of NPV can be determined. While situation investigation gives helpful data about an undertakings independent hazard, it is restricted in two different ways. In the first place, it just thinks about a couple of discrete conditions of the economy, and consequently gives data on just a couple of potential productivity results for the undertaking. In all actuality, a practically endless number of potential outcomes exist. Situation examination normally contains just three results, however it could be extended to incorporate more conditions of the economy, state, five or seven. Be that as it may, there is a handy breaking point on what number of situations can be remembered for a situation examination. Second, situation analysisâ€at least as ordinarily conductedâ€implies an extremely distinct relationship among the dubious factors. That is, it accept that all the most pessimistic scenario input esteems happen simultaneously, on the grounds that the most dire outcome imaginable is characterized by consolidating the most noticeably terrible conceivable estimation of each unsure variable. Despite the fact that this relationship (every single most noticeably awful worth happening together) may hold in certain circumstances, in others it may not hold. Similar conditions happen in the best case. Hence, situation examination will in general make extraordinary benefit esteems for the most noticeably terrible and best cases since it consequently joins all most noticeably terrible and best info esteems, regardless of whether these qualities really have just a remote possibility of happening together. A few tasks are assessed based on limiting the current estimation of future expenses instead of based on the undertakings NPVs. This is done in light of the fact that it is regularly difficult to assign incomes to a specific undertaking; and it is simpler to concentrate on similar costs when two activities will create a similar income stream. In a customary investigation, when inflows are being limited, a higher rebate rate prompts a lower present worth, which punishes an inflow for higher hazard. Be that as it may, to punish an outpouring for higher hazard, the surge must have a higher present worth, not a lower one. In this manner, a money outpouring that has higher-than-normal hazard must be assessed with a lower-than-normal expense of capital. 15. The corporate expense of capital is the open door cost rate that mirrors the general hazard and obligation usage (limit) of the business. In this manner, the corporate expense of capital is the suitable rebate rate just for ventures that have hazard and obligation limit attributes that coordinate the business in the total. The task cost of capital is the suitable open door cost (markdown rate) for a specific undertaking. For ventures with hazard and obligation limit qualities like the firm in the total, the task cost of capital is equivalent to the corporate expense of capital. In any case, ventures with various qualities will have a task cost of capital that contrasts from the corporate expense of capital. When all is said in done, ventures with more noteworthy than-normal hazard will have a task cost of capital that is more noteworthy than the corporate expense of capital, and activities with lower-than-normal hazard will have an undertaking cost of capital that is not exactly the corporate expense of capital. In spite of the fact that obligation limit contrasts ought to be thought of, practically speaking such contrasts are infrequently perceived

Kant s Doctrine Of Virtue - 1802 Words

Within the Metaphysics of Morals, Immanuel Kant drafted the Doctrine of Virtue as a means to further develop his ethical theory, which he first laid out in the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals. In addition to discussing Kant’s doctrine of virtue, I will reconstruct Kant’s argument for beneficence as a duty of virtue. In the course of this reconstruction, I will explain what a duty of virtue is, from what it derives and the extent to which one must fulfill that duty. Likewise, I will explain the way one must fulfill their duty of virtue, how it relates to duties of right, and how it relates to the duty to pursue one’s perfection. Lastly, I will offer an evaluation of the argument. In the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, Kant derived his theory of the Categorical Imperative in which he defines moral law as an obligation that mandates the cooperation of everyone without exception. Which means, moral law requires people to execute its demands, despite what they may be. However, in order for one to do so, they must first be able to distinguish what those required duties are, as well as make a conscience decision to perform accordingly. Lastly once those things have been satisfied, one must physically carry the duties out. Although people have outside pressures and temptations that often sway their decision making, the doctrine of virtue states one must develop an understanding of what is required of them so that they may acknowledge such actions as their willShow MoreRelatedImmanuel Kant And Kant On Morality1097 Words   |  5 Pagesphilosophers take on morality, there are two which are usually compared to one another, Immanuel Kant and David Hume. How Relevant Is Freud Today - 1559 Words

Sigmund Freud was arguably one of the most influential psychologists in the investigation of personality, and his work can still, to some extent, be considered relevant today. His methods allowed for the first time the investigation of phenomena that were previously difficult to tackle, such as dreams and sexual desires. â€Å"Yes and No† is a justified reply to the question of whether Freud is relevant today in that his ideas on personality were the first to investigate the role of childhood trauma, and have been reflected in the work of many other psychologists since, either as a continuation of his work or as a reaction to it. In this essay, the relevance of Freuds Personality Theory will be assessed, with reference to conflicting†¦show more content†¦This discredits the idea that childhood experiences shape personality, questioning the relevance of Freuds theory. Further evidence of a biological basis to personality rather than the explanations offered by psychoan alytic theories come from the neuroscience of personality. For example, the amygdala, located within the limbic system, appears to be vital for processing all emotional stimuli (Pervin et al, 2005). In addition to this, neurotransmitter functioning provides more evidence for the idea of biological influences on the development of personality traits. The drugs involved in alleviating depression, Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors, (SSRIs), were administered to normal individuals and have been found to â€Å"reduce negative affective experience and to increase social, affiliative behaviour,† (Knutson et al, 1998, cited by Pervin et al, 2005). Support for biological theories also comes from the case study of Phineas Gage. Investigating a factor that affects the rate of re Essay actionAim To investigate the effect of concentration on the rate of reaction To investigate the reaction between hydrochloric acid and magnesiumPrediction 1) -I predict that the higher the concentration of hydrochloric acid the faster the time will be for the magnesium to dissolve. 2) -I predict that the higher the molar of hydrochloric acid, the more hydrogen gas will be given off. 3) -I predict that the higher the concentration of hydrochloric acid the faster the rate of reaction. This will therefore mean that the rate of reaction will be faster. 4) I predict that when I double the concentration, I would expect the rate of reaction to double with the concentration. ReasonsRates of Reaction measures different reaction rates and tells us things that affect the speed of a reaction. Seven factors that affect how fast a reaction takes place are: Temperature Catalyst Pressure PH Surface area Concentration LightWe can change speeds of reactions in three ways- Increasing the surface area Increasing concentration Raising the temperature Adding a catalyst There are three ways to measure the speed of a reaction and these are precipitation, change in mass and the volume of gas given off. The four things that are suitable for the magnesium reaction to affect how fast it takes place are Temperature Turbulence Concentration Surface areaConcentration is the best factor to for this magnesium and hydrochloric acid reaction because it is easy to undertake. In this experiment between hydrochloric acid and magnesium ribbon. The hydrochloric acid will dissolve the magnesium strip. This should produce hydrogen gas. The chemical equation for this reaction isMg (s) + 2HCL (aq) Mg Cl (aq) + H (g) This chemical reaction involves reactants which when mixed may cause a chemical reaction. This in turn may produce different products. What I am expecting to see in the beaker is the magnesium and hydrochloric acid reacting together to form fizzing in the solution and I think I will also see bubbles, which I may see slowly or fast depending on the amount ofconcentration. Magnesium will eventually break away and eventually dissolve. The concentration of the hydrochloric solution affects the rate of the reaction. If the concentration is too high, there will be more collisions between the enzymes, which will also increase the rate of reaction. On the other hand, if the concentration is to low then the collisions of enzymes with substrates will slow down or stop making the rate of reaction slower. This means that there will be less frequent collisions between the atoms. When there are more particles (reactants) present, the more likely a collision, and so the higher the reaction rate.Source (GCSE Bitesize chemistry, by David Smith) These factors will affect the rate of reaction. This is because of the collision theory. The collision theory shows us that it is necessary for the reacting particles to collide with each other particles. This is so there is enough energy to form or break bonds between the particles. If however, the particles do not have enough energy then the particles will bounce back not causing a collision. The minimum amount of energy needed for a co llision to take place between the particles is called the activation energy. Source (GCSE chemistry revision guide, by Ian Lee)The Maxwell Boltzmann curve is a graph that predicts the probability that the different particles will collide with each other at different temperatures. On the graph shown below the dark shaded area shows the particles that have enough energy to collide with each other. The very light shaded area is the particles that do not have enough energy to collide because they do not have enough energy. The line on the graph showing the activation energy is the minimum amount of energy that is needed for the particles to collide. This Maxwell Boltzmann curve can be related to the reaction between magnesium and hydrochloric acid because the graph shows us how much energy is needed for the particles to make and break new bonds. The Maxwell Boltzmann curve is shown below The equation Ka shows the number of variables that are acting on the reaction between magnesium an d hydrochloric acid. K = rate constantA = the reactant M = the order of the reaction The rate constant is the amount of hydrochloric acid this is 25 ml. The reactant used is the concentration of the hydrochloric acid. The order of reaction is calculated by the number of variables that the reaction uses. In this, case the order of reaction is one. This is because the only variable in the reaction is concentration. Apparatus Hydrochloric acid (0.1 molar, 0.5 molar, 1 molar, 3 molar, 2 molar, 5 molar) Measuring cylinder to measure the amount of hydrogen gas given off Water used in the experiment Magnesium strips Used to react with the hydrochloric acid Stop watch to measure the time of how long the reaction takes place Water basin to put the water in Beaker to put the solution inDiagramFair Test-To make this a fair test I have to take a number of precautions. The first precaution I will take will be to keep the temperature of the hydrochloric acid the same. This will ensure t hat the rate of reaction is not increased by the temperature. I will also keep the volume of hydrochloric acid the same. This will make the test fair because then the volume of the acid will not affect the rate of reaction. I will also try to keep the surface area of the magnesium the same. This will make the test fair because it will then not speed up the rate of reaction in the experiment. Safety To ensure safety I will also check that the tube containing the hydrogen gas will contain no leaks. This is so it does not make the test unfair if the hydrogen gas leaks. Federalism From Its Beginning to the Present EssayThe general trend on the line graph (Fig 3) shows that as the concentration of the hydrochloric acid increased the rate of reaction also increased. This was because as the concentration increased the number of particles colliding with each other also increased. Concentration molar 5.0 was the fastest concentration because the rate at which the magnesium dissolved was quickest for the concentration. The concentration with molar 5.0 had the highest rate of reaction. This meant that the 0.1 concentration had the lowest rate of reaction. The reaction between hydrochloric acid magnesium is an exothermic reaction, which means that this reaction gives out heat. As this reaction gives off heat, this process will affect the rate of reaction. This should affect the rate of reaction graph (Fig 3) but I found out that my rate of reaction graph was unaffected. The conclusion I have made is based on the collision theory. The collision theory shows us that when there is enough energy in the particle the reactant can break or form bonds. In this case, the concentration increased the speed at which the particles collide. This means that as the concentration increased the speed of particles colliding increased because the particles had more energy. EvaluationTo improve this reaction between magnesium and hydrochloric acid I could have used more reliable equipment that measured more accurately. T his would have improved the accuracy of the results. We could have also used precise measuring equipment to measure the hydrochloric acid and the magnesium. This would have given us results that are more accurate. To improve the accuracy of the experiment we could have repeated the investigation more times than 3 times. This would have given us results that are more accurate. To further improve the investigation we could have used different rates of concentration. This would have given a wider range of results. To enhance the experiment further we should keep the room temperature constant. This would help the accuracy of the experiment because if the temperature were constant the rate of reaction would not be affected by the temperature. To improve our investigation in the future we could have used a more accurate stopwatch or used a better device of checking if the magnesium had fully dissolved. To improve our investigation in the future we could have used a logiests data logger. This would have helped us to achieve more accurate results in the investigation. In my investigation, there were a few abnormal results when compared to the overall average. For the 0.1 concentration the result was 3325.8, however the average time for 0.1 concentration was 3427.3. This means that the result is abnormal because the reading is not equal to the average time. For the 0.5 concentration the result was 510.4, however the average time for the 0.5 concentration was 532.3. This means that the result is abnormal because the findings are not equal to the average time. For the 1.0 concentration the result was 79.2, however the average time for 1.0 concentration was 70.69. This means that the result is abnormal because the reading is not equal to the average time. For the 3.0 concentration the result was 12.5, however the average time for 3.0 concentration was 11.81. This means that the result is abnormal because the findings are not equal to the average time. I think that the abnormal results were caused by either wrong measurements of hydrochloric acid or th e inability to view when the magnesium strip had dissolved. This would mean that the results would be higher or lower than the average time result. When we completed our experiment, we could have investigated further by experimenting with different concentrations of hydrochloric acid or different lengths of magnesium. This would have given us a wider range of results. Crocs Essay Example

Crocs Essay Crocs began marketing its shoes at a November 2002 boat show. Crocs were originally intended to be sold to boaters, because of their slip proof, non-marking sole and the fact that they are waterproof and odor resistant. However, this market soon expanded to include gardeners, healthcare workers, waiters, and other professionals who had to be on their feet all day. This market began to encompass markets Crocs had never considered. Over the course of a year what had started out as simply an idea on a sailing trip evolved into one of the greatest footwear phenomena of the decade. Products and Target Market Crocs currently targets multiple market segments ranging from boaters to gardeners to simply individuals wanting a comfortable pair of sandals. However, the firms initial target market was boaters. Crocs initial foray into the market was an effort to provide a comfortable pair of nonslip boating shoes to a niche market. This target market soon expanded to others who would pay a premium price for comfort. Nurses, retail store clerks, and others who spent most of the day on their feet quickly recognized the value proposition Crocs offered: while expensive, these individuals were willing to pay a premium to avoid the discomfort of traditional shoes. Today, Crocs targets an even wider swath of the market. Crocs product category advertisements state that Crocs are for women, men, kid, sports, and everyone. To further broaden their market, Crocs advertises that among these segments, customer will find its products to be comfortable on the beach, around the house, in the rain, in cold weather, off the road, for walks in town, and even something that will look good in the office. Crocs has kept its original characteristics of light-weight, non-slip, brightly colored product lines while created additional styles to accommodate the needs of different consumers. Crocs also offers apparel products such as t-sh irts, shorts and even womens leggings. Why Are Some Fruits Sweet and Some Sour and how does the Ripening of Essay

Why Are Some Fruits Sweet and Some Sour and how does the Ripening of Fruit Affect It - Essay Example Other sour tasting fruits include raw mangoes. According to Hulme (1970) fruits consist of different substances, including vitamins, sugars, starch, proteins, and organic acids in different proportions. The taste of a particular fruit depends on the concentrations of these substances. In sweet tasting fruits, the concentration of fructose, which is a simple monosaccharide, is higher than the concentration of sour substances such as organic acids. Fructose is a simple sugar and is highly soluble in water and hence it is a major component of fruit juices. Naturally, bananas have high concentration of starch and as they ripen, it is converted into simple sugars such as fructose (Childers, 1978). This explains why ripe bananas have sweet taste while green bananas are not. In fruits, fructose could be in its simplest form or as a component of sucrose. Sour taste in fruits is caused by high concentration of hydrogen ions present in organic acids (Hulme, 1970). Some common organic acids in sour fruits include citric, malic and tartaric acids. Ripening of fruits affects the process of seed dispersal in various ways. According to Mauseth, (2003) the major functions of the fruit are to protect the developing seed and enhance its dispersal. As the seed matures, the fruit ripens simultaneously. Fruits undergo different ripening processes that determine the eventual method of dispersal. In wind-dispersed seed, the fruit undergoes dehydration or desiccation, which reduces the weight of the seed. In other wind-dispersed seeds, the dehydration process enhances development of flight structures such as wings, which increases the floating ability of the seed in air (Mauseth, 2003). Therefore, the desiccation process during the ripening of wind-dispersed seeds reduces the weight of the seed, which makes it possible for wind to carry and disperse the seed away from the parent plant. In animal dispersed seeds, the ripening process increases the attraction of the fruit to the consumi ng animal (Biale, 1954). During ripening of such fruits, the plant releases enzymes within the plant that enhances conversion of complex compounds such as starch into sweet tasting sugars. The enzymes enhance production of sweet smelling aromatic compounds to attract animals during the ripening process. Some fruits such as tomatoes release ethylene that induces ripening, characterized by production of pink, reddish coloration and softening of the fruit (Mauseth, 2003). The appealing color, sweet taste and aromatic smell attract animals, which eat the fruit and disperse the seeds in the process. Therefore ripening of fruit enhances seed dispersal by promoting development of characteristics appropriate to the particular method of dispersal. Human beings interfere with the method of seed dispersal by consuming grains and fruits. Consumption of immature seeds and fruits interferes with natural process of seed growth and development (Hulme, 1970). Therefore, when people eat the immature fruits and seeds, the natural process of seed dispersal and the eventual germination is interfered with because the seeds lose their viability to germinate. Besides consumption, human beings interfere with the process of seed dispersal by subjecting fruits and seeds to various techniques such as food processing and storage. Most food processing methods such as drying removes water in the seeds and the fruits. This interferes with critical seed development processes that depend on water (Hulme, 1970). For example, drying seeds and fruits interferes with enzymatic and hormonal processes and reactions that promote ripening, development and eventual seed dispersal. Storage of seeds and fruits prevent other agents of dispersal such as wind and other animals from carrying

Minimum wages and unemployment level Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Minimum wages and unemployment level - Essay Example in the amount of minimum wage brings about reduction in the employment levels evidently seen with employment elasticity ranging from -0.1 to -0.2 amongst the teenagers and from -0.15 to -0.2 for the youths (Charles, 2002, p 89). Employers in a firm are bounded with the minimum wage law which is meant to prevent the employers from paying their employees rate below the minimum wage. This law is widely used in the present day countries. In UK and the USA, this law was only applicable to the women and the children. The extended use of the law was influenced by the period of the great depression. If the objective of the minimum wage was to ensure that employed achieved a worthy standard of living, then some provisions had to be made for those who are retrenched (Flinn, 2010, p58-62). During the imposition of the minimum wage by the responsible bodies, firms within that jurisdiction would not be permitted to pay less than what the responsible body mandates, for any service that they have received. For instance, this is when the governing body passes legislation that is meant to raise the wage bill from its initial of $6.72 per hour to $8.0 per hour. In line with the above minimum wages, at $8.0, supply of the labour service was 70,000 hours, but only 50,000 hours was what was in demand by the firms. Within a market with voluntary trade, the decisions of firms to hire its employees cannot be influenced with an external body, reason being the quantity of labour needed is normally established through the desire of the firm to buy but not the desire of the workers to sell (Joshua, 1999, p 123). Through the above discussion there is an assumption that, increasing the amount of minimum wage in a country, the number of employed individual would increase. In addition, there is an emerging possibility that everyone would be able to get a job. However, the number of hours that they initially worked would be reduced. Putting this case into consideration, there would be rise in

Corrective measures for today and the future Essay Example for Free

Corrective measures for today and the future Essay There are many ways to stop war drivers and hackers and these methods may be as simple or complex depending upon the nature of the network. First, one should understand that war drivers and hackers can easily tap into a network because of the plug-and play nature of modern devices. Also some advanced security systems such as the Wired Equivalency Privacy (WEP) system used by 802. 11b wireless networks is plagued by some common errors in the system, including failure to engage it entirely by itself or engage WEP encryption key set at default. Thus, method such as WEP, IPSEC, and Wi-fi protected Access, DMZs, Firewalls and Virtual Private Networks can be established to deter war drivers and hackers (â€Å"War Driving†, 2004). WEP Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is basically a security protocol, specified in the IEEE Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) standard (which is 802. 11b) designed to provide the WLAN a security level that matches a wired network. Security for a WLAN can be tricky, as access to a WLAN is not hindered by most physical barriers. WEP works by encrypting data before transmitting it to the wireless network. This encryption can be done in conjunction with other protection methods such as password protection, end-to-end encryption and virtual private networks (VPNs) (â€Å"Wired Equivalent Privacy†, 2006). But WEP is not without it flaws, as proven by a research group from the University of California at Berkeley. The group was able to intercept and change data transmissions and gone as far as gaining access to restricted networks and data. On the other and, WECA (Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance) claims that WEP is not the only security system method available for WLAN. WEP is popular because most consumers have put up much of their trust in WEP that other methods (â€Å"Wired Equivalent Privacy†, 2006). IPsec IPsec (Internet Protocol Security) is defined as the backbone for a set of security protocols for network communications. IPsec claims to be effective in establishing virtual private networks and remote user access in dial-up accounts and private networks. One obvious advantage of IPsec is that security arrangements can be taken cared of without changing computers or users. CISCO (a major promoter of IPSEC) provides support for IPSEC on their network routers (â€Å"IPsec†, 2005). IPsec has two options for security service. First is the Authentication Header (AH), which basically authenticates the identity of the data sender and the other one is Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP) which handles both sender authentication and data encryption. Both services packages specific information into packets in a header that follows the IP packet header. Separate key protocols can be selected for this such as the ISAKMP or Oakley protocol (â€Å"IPsec†, 2005). ISAKMP (Internet Security Association and Key Management Protocol) is a coded protocol based on the IKE key exchange protocol (ISAKMP, 2006). On the other hand, the Oakley protocol is a security system in which two authorized parties can exchange confidential material through the Internet (Oakley Protocol, 2006). Both protocols can be used on a secured connection and is defined by RFC (Request for Comments) 2408 and 2412 respectively. Wi-Fi Protected Access Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a new security protocol that was designed to replace WEP. It is technically an improved version of WEP. Though WPA has improved data protection features, WEP is still considered to be best for home use. However, WEP is not recommended for corporate use because it is prone to eavesdropping and hacking, because it is not able to handle the bulk of data that WPA is capable of handling. WPA uses Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) which uses pre-packet mixing function, extended initialization vector, and a re-keying mechanism. WPA is also said to have stronger user identification because it is based on 802. 1 xs and has an Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP). Also WPA relies on RADIUS (a central authentication server) to identify each user â€Å"Wi-Fi Protected Access†, 2005). WPA is actually under IEEE 802. 11i, and there are rumors that a second version called WPA2 is on the works. It is also predicted that by 2003, there will be software updates that will allow both the client and server to establish WPA in their system. â€Å"Hotspots† can then operate within a mix of WEP and WPA modes to support both home and corporate clients. In case of a home client, the identification system would be simpler than the one that will be issued for corporations (â€Å"Wi-Fi Protected Access†, 2005).

Marijuana and College Students Essay -- Marijuana Students Pot

Marijuana and College Students Marijuana may control the way people act, think, and even hurt their college academics. Marijuana is one of the most popular used drugs in America ranking about third after tobacco and alcohol. Marijuana is a substance that has become very much a part of American culture; many college students have either used it occasionally or regularly. With that in mind, I thought it would be interesting to find out about students at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) and their use of marijuana. In fact most students might not even know what they are smoking and what exactly makes them feel the way they do. Exactly what is marijuana? Marijuana is made of the dried leaves and flowers of the female cannabis sativa plant, and looks like oregano. There are many different marijuana preparations that are widely used to obtain effects. It can be either smoked or taken by mouth. Marijuana can be smoked in the form of a hand-rolled cigarette ("joint" or "reefer") it is also smoked in a variety of pipes. Hashish (hash) is a dried-caked resin from the flowers and leaves of the plant. It is sold in chunks and cubes, and its color range from light brown to black. Hashish is often blended with tobacco and smoked. It is more potent than marijuana because it contains a higher concentration of THC. THC is the main ingredient in all cannabis preparations. The more THC cannabis contains, the stronger it is. The effects of marijuana are similar to alcohol intoxication. Small amounts can make you relaxed and generally less inhibited yet some users say that it enhances the experiences of music, food and sex. After hearing all about how college students feel about marijuana I wanted to find out for myself, so... ...re lighting up next time. Maybe they will wonder just what harm they have done to their body already. Many people that smoke marijuana have the effects that are discussed in this paper. It can plainly be seen, their lack of motivation and kind of "spacey ness" that is commonly associated with marijuana smoking. I often wonder what these people would be like if they stopped their use and allowed themselves to rid their body of the drug and its by-products. Marijuana use is still very popular throughout the United States, and the fact that people are not educated enough about its effects is very detrimental. These people are hurting themselves, and they don't know (and many just don't care) what they are doing to their bodies. If marijuana use continues to grow too much, we may have a country of unmotivated people, with many more health problems. Where will we be then?

Dec Of Independence Essay English

However, the document does not just serve as a list of misrepresentations and evils done by the King, but it in fact helps to outline an abstract plan of how the people of the colonies should live after secession from the Crown. Jefferson is able to annunciate, within the document, the utter importance of the basic rights all men should have. The Declaration of Independence also helps guide the people away from governments with unchecked power. Jefferson's overarching theme within the document is self- government and he writes with a huge emphasis on State representation.Basic human rights are some of the most controversial topics that the world has ever seen. The Declaration of Independence is no exception. The principles of the document all deal with basic human rights. Jefferson states the King's inhumane decisions and actions against the rights, we the people, ought to have as human beings. Jefferson states that we all have, â€Å"certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. Jefferson has incredibly strong feelings about people who try to take away our natural rights and he wants to deter the States from being tuck under a government that does not respect those very rights. Not only as people do we have the privilege to these rights, but we also have the duty to preserve them at any cost. Jefferson's statements within the document help to show his true agenda; to offer a reason to change their society so that the people can be free without misrepresentation. Thomas Jefferson proves the importance of rebelling against absolute monarchs within his writing of The Declaration of Independence. He writes of how the King used his power for evil instead of good. For instance, Jefferson states, † He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people. † The people Of the colonies must stand up to the British Empire at any cost to preserve their liberty and fre edom. He puts everything on the table and provides a direction to a system in which States can govern themselves and depend less on a centralized government. Jefferson demands that the people of the colonies are able to live in peace whilst completely represented in terms of taxation, military endeavors, etc.Although at times Jefferson's words seem to sound like he has a literal plan of how the colonies should be governed, in fact, it is a philosophy that does not have to be limited to just those who live in the colonies, but any person or people that feel they have been unfairly or unrightfully governed. His words offer a powerful message that any oppressor, whether a single person or a unified government, needs to be dealt with and should never be allowed to continue with wrath. The only way to entirely get rid of tyrannical or corrupt leaders, kings, etc. is to give the majority of the power to each individual state to self-govern.Jefferson feels above all else that state rights and representation are the most important ideals and values we, as a people, should have. The Declaration of Independence serves as a highly summarized game plan to create a less intrusive and less intensive government that will not unfairly govern the people. The document Serves as a message that the United Colonies are independent and shall govern themselves whether or not the King of Britain agrees. Jefferson demands that States at least have proper representation within a national government if there is to be one.Though, this document is not merely just a plan for a new government, it also serves as something more: an idea that will fuel freedom and a new beginning for the people. Jefferson uses several different means of getting his point across within The Declaration of Independence. He uses harsh examples of evil actions committed by the tyrannical government of Britain. Another example of Jefferson getting his point across is a brand new future he speaks of as well as hat th e States/Colonies could have if they get rid of the British monarch.

Ethical Issues in Health Care Marketing In today’s competitive world, in order for any organization to succeed it requires the most fundamental aspect of marketing, which is to focus on their consumers (Berkowitz, 2011). As the marketing and technological development continues to keep expanding, as an outcome various health care organizations also need to be more adaptable to suffice the growing needs and demands of their consumers. Furthermore, there is a downside for the advancement in health care as it raises many ethical as well legal considerations. However, with efficient policies and guidance health care marketing can be a great platform for both benefiting as well as educating consumers. Summary and Relevance of the Article in Today’s Health Care Market The article does a excellent job in comparing today’s health care marketing to the health care marketing about two decades ago. Back in the days, health care organizations were not as inclined towards implementing various marketing strategies as compared to now a day (Quinn, 2008). Also, according to Quinn (2008) even to publish a simple advertisement, the marketing department had to gain approval from all the upper hands from â€Å"every physician in that specialty to every administrator on the leadership team†. Eventually, the marketing of health care organizations of today has undergone a significant change where advertisement for one’s products and services has became almost a mandatory procedure.
